Unbelievable “ Yard Long” 4 Foot WWI Picture Troop Ship USS Orizaba 1919 Framed. This is one of those pieces I know I’m gonna regret selling for years to come. But that’s the business. I’ve seen A Lot (hundreds, probably) of WWI “Yard-Long” pictures of formations of soldiers, but never have a seen one of a troop ship full of soldiers returning home from France. This one actually measures a full 4 feet in its frame.
The ship is the USS Orizaba, which ferried troops across the Atlantic in both World Wars, and later served in the Brazilian Navy.
The caption in the center of the photo is hard to see, because it’s over the white of the ship, but it reads:
“The ship that brought us home. Aug 6, 1919 - U.S.S. Orizaba”
The other caption on the bottom right hand corner is actually the photography company (which I can’t make out) and says Newport News, VA. This is most likely where the photo was taken. Details of the skyline of the port are faintly visible in the background.
The soldiers on the ship predominantly seem to be wearing the same patch. I’m not familiar with what it is, but it appears to be a dark square with a light colored triangular emblem in the center. Possibly 82nd, but I’m not sure. Some have their rifles, some have medals, all manner of gear and expressions are visible. Many sailors are also visible, including the officers near the bow, and likely one of them is the captain.
This is an absolutely fascinating picture that captures hundreds, if not thousands, of young soldiers experiencing one of the best feelings life has to offer. Home coming at the end of war. It deserves to be in a museum or prized collection. You will not be disappointed!
The frame is original, or at least relatively close to the same period. I have not removed the picture since I have owned it.
