Description
Up for your consideration is a set of2
rare postcards from Guam.
Unused condition; found at a local store on the island.
These are 2 different postcards of the last WWII survivor in Talofofo, Guam--Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi, R.I.P. 1915-1997.
Back reads: "On January 25, 1972, only a few thousand meters from here, Sergeant Shoichi Yokoi of the Imperial Japanese Army was captured by local residents, ending 28 years of hiding in the jungles of Guam. Sergeant Yokoi's capture was headline news worldwide. His story of almost three decades of hiding and survival, with very little contact with "civilization," captured the attention of the world. When Yokoi left the silence of the Talofofo River Valley, he stepped into the jet age."
The above paragraph was printed in Japanese language as well on the back.
Both cards have a sketch of Sgt. Yokoi in the center.
One card has pictures of Yokoi's coconut rope shoe; Yokoi's cave entrance; Yokoi's bottle, and Yokoi's cave interior.
Second card has pictures of Yokoi when he was told he can return home to Japan; Guam school girls view Yokoi's cave possessions; Yokoi's home for 28 years: Talofofo, Guam; and Yokoi's flag.
Each card measures at approx. 4" x 6" in size.
