Description
For sale are two sheets from the P.F. Collier Book “The United States Navy From the Revolution to Date” Printed in 1917.The prints of the cruisers USS Olympia, New York and the Battleship Oregon are 14”x9”.
The full sheets themselves are 16.5”x12”.
Detailed images of the Olympia to include admiral Dewey’s cabin are 6 ¾” x 5”.
(Note that he shaired his cabin with the aft sponson gun.
The USS Concord and Boston are both 6 ¾“ by 3 ¼”.
The protected cruiser USS Olympia was commissioned on the 5
th
of February 1895.
She most famously served as Admerial Dewey’s flag ship during the Spanish American War and lead the American attack at Milila Bay.
In service during the First World War the Olympia brought the body of the Unknown Soldier back from France in 1921.
Finally decommissioned in December of 1922 the Olympia is now a
museum ship in Philadelphia.
The protected cruiser USS New York was commissioned on the 1
st
of August 1893.
During the Spanish American War, she was the flagship of Admerial William Sampson.
In 1911 she was renamed Saratoga to make the name New York available for a new battleship.
Again, renamed Rochester in 1917 to free her name for a new battlecruiser.
She served in many roles bringing troops home from WWI and at one point transported General Pershing to Chile.
Late in life she served in the Pacific and in 1941 ended up being scuttled in Subic Bay to prevent her being captured by the Japanese.
The Battleship USS Oregon BB3 was commissioned on the 15
th
of July 1896.
She played pivotal roles in navel engagements during Spanish American War.
She served during the First World War and was later put into reserves.
She was finally decommissioned in 1919.
Thought to be too expensive to be brought back into service, she was stricken from the navy roles in 1941.
Though attempts were made to make her a museum ship, funds could not be raised, so she was sold for scrap in 1956.
The Gunboat USS Concord (February 1891 to November 1909) and the Cruiser USS Boston (May 1887 to April 1946) saw combat during the Spanish American War.
Both had a continued wide range of honorable service.
